Chapter Twelve

Neil woke to stiffness and pain, also to the strange sensation of warmth all along his back and the weight of an arm around him. He stayed as still as he could so he wouldn’t wake Mal. The crying had been even more embarrassing than needing help to pee. A part of him had wanted to tell Mal to leave him be so he wouldn’t see the tears, but it had felt too good to hear his soft murmurs and be held.

Comforting, yes, but dangerous. He wished he could turn over and burrow into the strong arms wrapped around him, snuggle into his warmth…maybe kiss him good morning. And the warming coil of fantasy died there. He could never do that, not to Malachai. It would be too easy to ask for things…ask him to stay in the knowledge that there was no chance he would refuse. It would be an awful thing to repay all his kindness by twisting it into something Mal didn’t want.

Malachai shifted, rolling to his back and taking his warmth with him. Neil carefully rolled over too. The bed was narrow enough that there wasn’t a way for them not to touch while he did it. When he could see Mal’s face, he filled his eyes for a moment, saving how he looked in his head for later when all he’d be able to do was steal glances. Then Mal opened his eyes. If he’d torn his gaze away, he might have been able to play it off like he’d looked for only a moment, but once those silvery-gray eyes settled on him, he couldn’t look at anything else. Before he could talk himself out of it, he leaned in and pressed his lips to Mal’s.

To his surprise, Malachai did not throw him off the bed and stalk out. He lay on his back a while longer, just watching Neil, and his mouth moved under the kiss as if he was trying to speak but unable to make words. Mal stroked one gentle hand up and down his back and when Neil finally broke the kiss, he offered a perplexed smile.

“What was that for?”

“Because…I wanted to. Because every time I’ve thought I should go one way, lately, it’s turned out I should have gone another. I didn’t want to talk myself out of kissing you.”

Mal reached up to stroke a wisp of Neil’s hair away from his face. His gaze shone like moonlight through the darkest clouds and his words were still very mild and bemused when he said, “I had no idea that you were even thinking of me that way. What with everything that’s been going on with you. I’d have kinda thought that kissing was the last thing on your mind.”

“Should I not have done it?” he asked, wondering if he’d gotten things wrong again.

“Don’t get me wrong, it was a very pleasant wake up call,” Mal assured him. “But I wasn’t expecting it. That’s not why I stayed with you last night.
